esboços | figments

The project esboços | figments is an on-going, life-long body of work that acts as a meditation on the complexities of my migrant experience and hybrid cultural identity. It focuses on womanhood and the female body, as well as on the porousness of being, time and place.

esboços | figments has as premise the weaving of words and images to construct a non-language that escapes grammar, syntax, and technicality. Using ambiguity as creative strategy, the interplays of meaning in images and texts function as shattered signification.

The weaving of texts and images is conceived on a theme for each piece. The conceptual aim for this work is the visual immediacy of the images against the unravelling images that emerge from the texts. While in most cases texts and images function as self-contained realities, when placed in conjunction, they become symbiotic: they blend, crash, evoke and resist each other, creating a dialogue in the non-language I propose.

The project refuses conventional assumptions of otherness, and aims to highlight the vulnerable condition of not fully belonging in a world of rigid constructions.
